Balyan, Bangka, Sesyon
While I was surfing the internet, waiting for my HDT test to finish, I came upon this short story titled Balyan. It's a Cebuano short story written by Macario Tiu, a professor from Ateneo de Davao. This story won first prize for the Cebuano Short Story category in the 2005 Palanca Awards (a prestigious literary awards event in the Philippines). It's a story about a balyan (a Bagobo sort-of-doctor practicing traditional medicine) and a nonbelieving "man of science" living in a remote village in Davao. It has some funny elements, like when the balyan was dialing his imaginary cellphone to call the abyan or diwata. I really laughed hard upon reading that. For those who are interested, here's the link to the site: Balyan by Macario D. Tiu.
I also found 2 other Cebuano short stories in the same website (which I realized was the 2005 Palanca Awards website). The short stories are Bangka sa Kinabuhi by Don Pagusara and Sesyon by Josua Cabrera. Bangka was in second place while Sesyon was in third place for the Cebuano category. I liked the conversation between the 2 main characters in Sesyon. It just seems so ordinary. And it's also hilarious! But the ending was heart-breaking though. Bangka, on the other hand, is quite serious. And the words used were so deep. Nonetheless, I had a good time reading it.
That's all. Back to work now.
